It has been another smooth start to the year with everyone settling in nicely to their new classrooms. It has been great walking around and saying hello and finding out all of the exciting things that people got up to on their holidays. I would like to extend a very special welcome to our new students and their families. I am sure you will find your experience at our school both challenging and rewarding.

As we start the new year, we do so with some systems in place due to the Coronavirus. We continue to follow the direction of both the Department of Education and the Health Department with regard to the virus. I thank everyone for their support so far. Information for parents will continued to be shared as it comes to hand. The latest Information Sheet for parents is included in this newsletter.

It was also quite devastating during the break to watch the impact of the bushfires in the eastern parts of Australia. Living in a hills community, it only highlights how important it is that we have well established emergency practices in case of something like this occurring during a school day. Our Bushfire Emergency plan is available on the website and teachers and students will conduct a drill in the first few weeks of the term to ensure everyone knows what to do.

The upgrade to the B Block toilets is all but complete, with students having access as of this morning. There are a couple of little things to be fixed, but overall they look great. I encourage students to treat them respectfully and ensure they stay clean and fresh. We are also anticipating the STEM Building to go up very quickly over the next few weeks. I am meeting with the builders tomorrow to arrange a start and finish date. Along with these upgrades, we are also in the new Science Lab in the Cooke Room, with new furniture arriving over the holidays. All of these are exciting upgrades and keep our school modern and relevant.

I would welcome new staff members, Ms Archdall, our new Deputy Principal, Miss Lowe (Music and Kindergarten), and Mr McNeil (Room 8). They have also settled in well and we are lucky to have them here at GHPS. We also welcome back Mrs Mayston (Room 9), Ms Dartnall (Room 9), Mrs Romeo (Room 3) and Miss Chadderton (Room 3) who are returning from leave.

Next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, the school will hold the 2020 parent information evenings. Tuesday will be for Years K – P, Wednesday Years 1- 3 and Thursday Years 4 – 6. As we did last year, we will start with myself addressing all parents in the Keene Undercover area from 6:00pm – 6:30pm followed by parents moving to their children’s classes where the classroom teachers will go over class procedures and routines for about 15 to 20 minutes. This will be an opportunity for you to meet and greet the teachers and hear all of the important information. An opportunity to talk one on one about your child will become available later in the term.

As part of the information shared, I will be informing parents about the use of Connect, which all classes are going to be using as their communication platform this year. Connect is a secure online environment developed by the Department of Education for staff, students and parents in public schools.  It will give our teachers a tool to deliver content to the students via an online classroom.  This means your children will be able to share with you what they are learning about, submit assignments and discuss issues together online anywhere, anytime.  For you, Connect provides easy access to information relevant to your child’s classes and learning such as assessments, teacher feedback and attendance data.

Schools can use Connect to keep you updated with important information.  Things like up-coming events, excursions, classroom activities, photos and stories can be sent to you via email or, if you prefer, via a push notification on your phone.

The Connect Now app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

You will soon receive your login details via the email address we have on file for you.  If you have recently changed your email address, please let us know by phoning 9257 4600 or emailing so we can update our details.

How do I find out more?

All students should have bought home several forms for parents to update and complete regarding some important information and permissions. Please return these forms promptly so that the office staff can update the necessary information. With regard to photo and internet permission please seek clarification if you have any concerns. Ideally we would like for all of our students to have permission for photographs and internet as it is very difficult to run our programs if some students are not allowed photos or to access the internet. The school takes every precaution to protect the privacy of students and monitor appropriate use of the internet so once again, please come and see the school if you are concerned. Student Health forms will be kept with the classroom teachers to avoid you having to fill one out for every excursion.

As the new year starts it is a timely reminder that the school does not provide supervision before 8:30am or after 3:15pm. Students need to be supervised by parents outside of these times as staff are in class preparing for the day and there is nobody on duty. If students arrive before this time, they are to sit quietly with their parents outside the classroom.

Classrooms open at 8:30am for students to go inside and prepare for the day. Just Dance will now be on Thursday mornings and we are investigating the option of providing some other supervised before school activities.

Front office staff are not qualified to provide supervision so please do not drop students at the office before school or ask to collect them late without speaking to a member of Administration.

Before and after school care is provided by Kids Inn Kalamunda, Kalamunda Out of School Care (KOSC) and SKOOLEEZ who all provide a pick up and drop off service to the school.

Please ensure you keep track of the calendar so that you know when activities and events that your children will be involved in will occur. You will note that assemblies have moved to Friday mornings. Hopefully this will allow more parents to come along around their work schedules. The Faction Swimming Carnival is also in Week 10 so Mr Caddy will send information about an after school Swim Squad in the coming weeks.
